Vintage stove restoration
For well over 10 years we have been meticulously restoring vintage stoves for clients all around Australia.
We were the first restorers to offer the quality re enamelling and nickel plating of stoves, we’re now pioneering the different stove paints to find a suitable substitute for enamelling as it starts to become cost prohibitive and the only remaining vitreous ware enameler left in Sydney has now closed the doors on re enamelling vintage stoves – the end of an era that started in the late 1920s.
Although, 1910 can still procure some oven parts, new decal inserts and stove fronts vitreous ware enamelled at the moment.
Not all stoves require new enamelling, as there are plenty of different brands and makes of vintage stove available still in Australia that are just a black cast finish in Bran oil, graphite paste or Stove Brite stove paints. However, when purchasing or having a stove restored professionally, please be aware of shoddy workmanship and what we refer to in the industry as backyard cowboys. They don’t restore these vintage stoves, they trick them up to sell and we then end up with these unfortunate stoves and their clients in our our workshops restoring them properly.
We stand by our reputation and meticulous restoration procedures. Please ask our clients about the caliber of our vintage stove restorations. Our motto on any restoration is ‘Near enough is just not good enough’ because the devil is always in the details…

Reproduction Metters chrome handles from the 1910 Ironworks. As mentioned, the devil is indeed, always in the detail. We’ll be producing these handles new in two sizes very soon.
We also don’t compromise at 1910 – All the new sheet-work on our ovens at 1910 Ironworks is either 316 stainless steel or 2mm oiled Mild steel. Depending on budget…
ABOVE – Here’s a fully restored Metters Canberra wood stove the way it should be, with an 1950s original temperature gauge (fully restored) and NEW door decal, as per the damaged original. Complete with new vitreous enamel, a stainless steel chimney and nickel plated, but not buffed door knobs.
“NEW VINTAGE DECALS? – At 1910 we can reproduce in enamel any original vintage decals, here are a few decal inserts we have been working on”
Here is another fully restored late 1930s Metters Bega No 2 wood stove from the 1910 Ironworks. Complete with original Bake Lite door knobs, and stainless sheeting – this particular stove was a total basket case, but was a family heirloom, needless to say we brought it back to showroom condition.
All wood stoves from 1910 are in 316 stainless steel sheet, with x2 complimentary bullnosed stainless steel shelves, so everything is easy to clean and all oven doors are insulated with new rock wool from recycled glass bottles…
Sometimes the stove hot plates and plate inserts are either missing, unavailable or too badly corroded to save. So, we cut new ones from 15mm steel plate to match the originals. This was for a Crown stove top.
At 1910 we have access to plenty of reference material for restoring vintage wood stoves professionally. Here a 1937 Catalogue reprint from Laurie Stevenson saves the day – 1910 finds out how to rebuild the fire box and flue on the Metters New Royal No2. Reproduction of this diagram is by permission of Laurie Stevenson – From the 1937 Book – Fuel Stove Sectional Catalogue Metters Limited July 1937 – reprint.

Not all the stove restorations we carry out are enamelled, the ones above are blacked cast iron, using Bran oil, Grape oil, graphite past or Stove Brite – high heat stove paint.
